Kochi: A long cherished dream of dolphin enthusiasts would soon become a reality if the high profile proposal made by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute is implemented in letter and spirit. This proposal is aimed at starting dolphin centered ecotourism projects. Dolphins can be easily spotted in the coastal waters of Goa Mangalore, Kozhikode and Kochi among other parts as per the study reports of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, New Delhi on the various marine mammals of Indian Exclusive Economic Zone.
The best part is that this project does not involve a heavy initial investment; a few specially equipped vessels with raised decks and high resolution binoculars are all that is required for the successful implementation of this programme. Add to it the big plus that mammals can be easily spotted in the shallow coastal waters and the visitors need not trail long distances into the deep seas to see these friendly mammals. In Kochi, dolphins are often seen in the backwaters apart from the shipping channels of Mattanchery.
The ship passengers traveling in the Kochi- Lakshadweep sector can see Dolphins accompanying their ships when the vessels leave Kochi. These extremely affable animals have a special affinity towards humans and they often come close to the passengers allowing them to caress and feed. These gentle giants of dolphins are highly popular all over the world for their friendly ties with humans and their pranks.
It is interesting to note that children with behavioral problems and conditions like Down’s syndrome are found to be benefited by the close interaction with dolphins, often referred to as Dolphin Therapy. It has been proved that Dolphin Therapy works wonders on both on kids and adults with Down’s syndrome as it is an innovative and relaxing activity, which enhances the learning capacity of the patients.
